With a total length of 336 km, the waterway featured liftlocks at Peterborough and Kirkfield, and a marine railway at Big Chute; first section from Trenton to Lake Simcoe was surveyed by Nicol Hugh Baird who also supervised construction work along the Trent River from 1833 to 1844; project completed in 1920.
